Number Wall Display

FacebookShare/Bookmark

Idea for displaying numbers and shapes on the wall.

Objectives:

To help children make a one to one correspondence with numbers. For example 10 = 10 items.

Materials:

  • Several patterns of shapes
  • construction paper in a variety of colors
  • numbers stenciled out and displayed on the wall.
  • scissors to cut out the shapes
  • tape to hang them up on the wall

Lesson Plan:

Stencil numbers in different colors of construction paper from 1 to 10 (or 5). Cut the numbers and hang them spaced apart on the wall you have chosen for this display. Leave space in between the numbers. Pick a different shape for every number you hang on the wall. For example:

  • 1 = triangles
  • 2 = circles
  • 3 = squares
  • 4 = rectangles
  • 5 = diamonds
  • 6 = heptagons
  • 7 = octagons
  • 8 = cylinders
  • 9 = arcs
  • 10 = ovals

After you have decided on a shape for each number, you have to make the shapes the same color as the numbers that correspond to that shape. For instance, if the number you hung up for four is green then the rectangles need to be green also. This just makes it look really nice and helps the children put it together easier.

After you have cut all the shapes in the correct color for that number, then hang them up on the wall underneath the number they go with. You can do this in any pattern you would like or just straight down the wall. Whatever you prefer.

This display will probably take an entire wall if you do 1-10. You might want to start with 1-5 and work your way up.

Have Fun! It looks super when it is all done and parents comment about it all the time!
